2:15 - 4:00 p.m. Test
Refresher Class: This is a four-hour refresher class for technicians who want to take the EPA Section 608 Certification Test. The refresher class will review the knowledge needed to take the test and will be held prior to the administration of the test. This is a refresher class - not a training process.
Certification Test, only: A technician can register to take the certification test without sitting through the refresher class. The registration process will prompt for the selection desired option.
About EPA Section 608 Certification
EPA regulations under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require that technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified.
Technicians are required to pass an EPA-approved test to earn Section 608 Technician Certification. The tests are specific to the type of equipment the technician seeks to work on. Section 608 Technician Certification credentials do not expire.
Types of Certification
To pass any EPA type, a candidate must pass a CORE section of the test plus one of the technician types [I, II, III or Universal]. Once CORE is passed, it need not be taken again and it may be used for additional EPA types.
The EPA developed four types of certification:
Study Guide and On-Site Procedures
Each participant of the Refresher Class will be sent a Study Guide. This manual, included in the Refresher Class registration fee, includes the information needed to refresh technicians on how to recover and contain refrigerant. This include both high- and low-pressure air conditioning and refrigeration equipment above and/or below 25 tons.
Free practice exams are available by clicking here.
Participants are typically allowed a non-programmable pocket calculator, Temperature-Pressure chart, and a pencil. A Temperature-Pressure chart is supplied in the EPA Section 608 Applicant Study Guide. A practice "Recovery Efficiency" chart is on the back of the Temperature-Pressure chart. On the day of the test, recreate the chart when given the instruction to begin the test.
Upon passing the test, the technician will receive a certificate and a wallet card from ESCO Institute. ESCO Institute will maintain a database of all technicians who have successfully passed the ESCO InstituteTraining Refrigerant Recovery test.
If a technician needs to retest in a certain section, the technician can apply to take the test, only. A technician must provide the proctor with a copy of both sides of a card or letter of previous EPA-approved certification/non-certification for proof that the technician took such a test.
If a copy of the previous EPA-approved testing is not provided, the technician must take the complete certification test, which includes Core, and Types I, II, and III. At a minimum, without documentation, the technician must take the Core and the Type that the technician needs for certification and to continue work in the HVACR industry.
